Saturday Morning with Wil Lawrence at Avonlea
We've added a new conference event, for early risers on Saturday morning.
Avonlea Village is a faux historical village in Cavendish just up the road from the conference site at Kindred Spirits Country Inn.
Assembled from a mixture of new construction and relocated buildings, the village is a high-quality recreation of a village that never existed on Prince Edward Island -- the Avonlea of Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery.
Although the village is fictional, the style of the original and recreated buildings is authentic. Wil Lawrence is the Island architect who worked on the concept plan and execution for Avonlea, developed plans for the new buildings, and led the rehabilitation of those that were relocated (one example of this: the schoolhouse at Avonlea is the actual schoolhouse that Montgomery taught in from Belmont Lot 16, PEI; when it was purchased from the owner, it had been used for years to store his boat, and had a double garage door running along the front).
On Saturday, Oct. 25 at 8:30 a.m., Wil Lawrence will lead an "architect's tour" of Avonlea for those who are interested. Avonlea is a short walk from Kindred Spirits Country Inn; people attending should probably head out at about 8:15 to arrive on time. Direction will be provided at the conference.
Wil is a passionate and well-spoken advocate for traditional Island architecture, and his tour should be of interest to anyone interested in architecture and history, as well as those interested in learning something of the mechanics of tourism infrastructure.
To help in the planning, could those attending the conference who are interested in attending this event please add a response to his post indicating so?
